2020 Community Service Events and Projects

Sound the Alarm - Red Cross "Sound the Alarm" smoke detector installation - April 4, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Home fires are the most frequent disaster, claiming seven lives every day. But having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half. That’s why the Red Cross is  rallying 27,000 volunteers to fundraise and install 100,00 free smoke alarms nationwide during Sound the Alarm events. Volunteers will install free smoke alarms, share safety information in at-risk communities.  One day of your life can change someone else’s forever.  Event will be held rain or shine!  You will get training I am told.  This is a five hour commitment.  Please reply if you can help.

Sports Challenge - May 8,  8:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. 

HAA raised over $20,000 for  Crimestoppers last year but the challenge had to be cancelled because of the weather.   This year we will be raising money for CrimeStoppers and Camp Hope  Crime Stoppers of Houston works diligently to empower, educate and engage the community in the important conversations about crime, public safety and the protection of society's most vulnerable citizens.  Camp Hope provides interim housing for combat veterans suffering from PTSD in a caring and positive environment.   For more details about this event, please click on this link  Sports Challenge We need volunteers at this event to help with the field activities and direct the teams.  

Blood Drive-June, date TBA - 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Thank you to all of our members and staff who have donated blood for Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center.  According to The Blood Center, one unit of donated blood can save up to three lives. Collection will be at the HAA office, 4810 Westway Park Blvd, 77041.  If you can donate, that would be great.  If not, promoting the drive would be helpful.  When I have a date, I will reach out.

School Supply Drive - July After the success of our Pasadena School District drive,  and to help apartment properties/residents in another area of our twelve county coverage area, we want to reach out to the Alief School District and provide donations to those students.  As soon as I have more details from school officials, I will pass them on to you.  We will need help with donations and drop off of the supplies.

Rebuild Houston Volunteer Day - September 

 Rebuilding Houstonprovides free home repair to senior citizens, veterans, homeowners with disabilities or working families affected by disasters.  Volunteers would paint and make light repairs under the direction of HAA member crew leaders.   Rebuilding Houston would provide the materials (nails, lumber, paint) HAA will provide the tools. This would be a full day, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  

Houston Food Bank Food Drive Begins November 1 -November 31

The drive officially starts November 1 each year.  HAA began our annual food drive in 1983 and has continued to help the food bank by asking properties as well as supplier companies to collect food for donation.  We also began collecting food for pets.  If you would like to make a financial donation to these two great organizations please visit their websites at   The Houston Food Bank and for the pets Rescue Bank  We need help sorting and packing food for deliver to the Food Bank.
